Practice Philosphy:
Sandy has practiced law in Scottsdale since 1988, concentrating
her practice in the area of family law. In her belief that
there is a better way for both the divorcing or divorced couple
and their children than to declare war, she focuses clients
on resolution, and counsels them to take the "high road" by
conducting themselves in an honest, respectful manner and
to look at long-term solutions for themselves and their children.
At the same time Sandy is a strong and devoted advocate of
a client's need to protect and preserve their rights.
As a result, she now offers Unbundled Legal Services (also
known as LImited Scope Legal Services), Mediation and other
Alternative Dispute Resolution Services, as well as Collaborative
Law Services to clients as alternative representation to assist
her clients in resolving their family issues, protecting their
rights and assets, while better understanding their options
and achieving their goals, in a proactive and positive way.
A former Judge Pro Tempore from 1996-2002, Sandy has covered
court calendars and cases for Maricopa County Superior Court
Family Court Judges as well as Court Commissioners and IV
D Court Commissioners, and presided over many settlement conferences
for the Family Court.
Sandy is trained in mediation, including programs through
the State Bar of Arizona and the County Bar and Court Systems,
in addition to the 40 hour certification for Divorce Mediation
from the Erickson Institute of Mediation in Minnesota.
Sandy has strong skills in diagnosing a case, quickly identifying
issues and transforming a client "story" into clear and relevant
arguments, to best present her client's position. Her training
in Alternative Dispute Resolution is useful in providing legal
representation with honesty, respect and a focus on problem
solving.
For those clients who want more knowledge and control over
their care and a need to present their own arguments, Sandy
understands the need for assistance and guidance with empathy,
compassion and an ability to focus on relevant facts and arguments.
Personal History:
Sandy was a Peace Corps volunteer in Sierra Leone, West Africa
for 2 years, working in preschools. From 1984 to 1986, she
was a Phoenix Police Department Reserve Officer, working first
on patrol out of the Sky Harbor station, which covered areas
of south central and south east Phoenix, where gang activity
was prevalent. Later she was assigned to the Phoenix Gang
Squad out of the downtown Police Station.
She worked her way through law school as a divorced single
parent with a young daughter. During Law School, she interned
for the Arizona Senate, the Prescott City Attorney and City
Prosecutor, and Judge Rudolph Gerber, then a Maricopa County
Superior Court Judge. She also worked on research projects
for 2 law school professors. Sandy has prepared and published
seminar materials for the 1997 National Business Institute's
Family Law Seminar in Arizona, as well as self-publishing
"About Divorce -Answers to Commonly Asked Questions", for
interested and potential clients, originally published in
1996 and updated in 2004.
Sandy has recently published an article on Unbundled Legal
Services for the AZAMFT Newsletter, for Marital and Family
Therapists in Arizona.
Sandy is married to her law partner, Mark Bregman, and is
the mother of two daughters, and grandmother of 3 children.
